Thrifting in style with kiddos

This will be a pretty short post because it's 2:58 am and I am on my phone but I wanted to get back into my blog because it will make me feel more happier day to day and overall feel like I am doing something where I feel could eventually become something more than just a blog but where people can gather and read throughout my blog and enjoy it!

Not everyone enjoys thrift stores but I always have ever since I was a little girl when my mom would bring me into the goodwill at least once a week. My mom always got her new business outfits there and I loved going into the toy isle to see what goodies that were donated that week. I happen to do the same with my children. The goodwill and thrift stores in general have changed quite a bit and the goodwill goes through their selection of donated goods to look for anything that may not be buyable which would be stained clothing, ripped clothing or broken goods. I have hunted and scored through the goodwill finding amazing things and even turned around and sold things making a profit! I know a lot of people won't have good things to say about the goodwill but the people that work there are wonderful and have always had a smile on their faces! My sweet boys actually enjoy shopping with me because of the awesome selection of toys! My boys don't need much to be content and happy and I want to raise them this way for many reasons, one being that money isn't everything and it doesn't make or break a person, it's about who you are inside that matters the most!

Here are some thrifty finds for my boys this week at goodwill that will be great to add to their closet!
I also want to say that I am a big shopper at once upon a child but I only go when they have the 50,60 and 70 percent off sale! I love that store!

I found some great brands including H&M for kids and Janie and jack, while this thrift store haul isn't very big, I still managed to find quality items at the thrift store for my boys!

These pair of jeans my oldest son will wear possibly around the first three months of school before they get holes at the knees. In almost every single pair my oldest gets holes in his jeans within a few short months! Hence why I hunt thrift stores for clothes! My boys grow so quickly and even though we could buy clothes brand new, I wouldn't dare because I like to save money and get the best bang for my buck! There is nothing wrong with having extra money saved right? We love it!

Just look at how well these pair of Janie & jack shorts look for being "used"! I have purchased brand new clothes and my boys are wild boys and love to explore and play so "new" clothes become used rather quickly! I will buy new from time to time when there is a sale but there is no logical reasoning to buy brand new  clothes for your children brand new! I wash thrift store clothes in hot water and sterilize everything!

Thrift shop love and finding stylish clothes for your little ones!

Alright, I am here to tell you something amazing! I am sure you have heard it millions of times but there are crazy killer deals at thrift stores. I know most people will not even step foot in one but I am here to tell you how truly awesome they can be!

Thrift stores, antique shops, goodwill, once upon a child ETC. are all great places to shop at for ANYONE, I do not care how much money you make or how little, the thrift store is wonderful for everyone! If you think about it this way, do you ever donate or give something away that you just didn't like or doesn't fit anymore? I have and I know many people that do and I know that I take care of my things so when I am out thrift shopping I remember that these things came from real households, they came from homes like mine and yours and there really is nothing wrong with it! Clothes and pretty much anything can be sanitized and cleaned! I have heard many people get disgusted over buying used sheets or blankets but have you ever slept over at someones home and used their sheets? Have you ever been to a hotel? Well the sheets and pillows are used by hundreds of people but they get washed and sanitized! live a little and go to a few thrift stores, you will thank me later ;)

Here are the reasons I love thrift shopping:
  • The thrill and excitement of the hunt is one of the MAIN reasons I do this, I never know what I will find and I am always excited to find something good. It is also my break time and a lot of fun for me! I have actually found a lot of great things at goodwill/various thrift stores that I knew were worth money and I resold them online for 4x the amount I paid for it. Most people don't like to spend 1-2 hours going through a thrift store looking high and low for things but I love it.
  • The second reason I love thrift stores is because I can find decent quality clothes for my children for the fraction of the price! You really need to look for the good quality items but trust me, they are there! You would be surprised what people give away. Remember folks you can clean and sanitize anything! There is no shame in your thrifting game;) My boys grow SO fast, I have bought brand new items but most of their closet is hand me downs and thrift store goods!
  • Lastly, I love the fact that a lot of thrift stores in my major metro city donate to a good cause. I know goodwill is a little bit of a controversy but they really do help our community. We have a Bethany's thrift store and they donate to help kids find homes and also the salvation army is a wonderful thrift store. I feel good spending money at thrift stores knowing it is also helping out my community as well.

The above photo is actually a photo of my little clan thrift hunting! They do well in the thrift store when I want to stop and shop for a few minutes especially if they are able to pick out a little toy or stuffed animal! We stopped here after we went for a swim at the YMCA!

This is my oldest son and he is sporting a Carters blue vest size 7 which was only $2.29 at goodwill, with a yellow and blue plaid button down shirt which was only $2.29 and a Crazy 8 brand. The sweatpants are a stylish skinny pant leg which I though would look great together, the brand is route 66. My son does not like to wear jeans so finding stylish options can be hard in the winter. These pants were also $2.29. These are all name brand and in like-new and good used condition.

When searching for clothes you will want to look for piling and fading in the clothes, generally I do not buy them if they show any signs of damage like piling or fading, I am very picky but that's also why I find the best children's clothes at the thrift shops!

When looking for an outfit, I always start with shirts or button-ups. I like to find coordinating pants after that. I love pairing a button-up shirt with a pair of adorable skinny sweat pants like the ones my son is wearing in the photo.

The one thing I am not picky about is stains! Some people will see a stain in clothes and feel like it ruined their childs clothing when in fact it has not! That is why some people give the item away. I can get a stain out of anything. I use Oxy detergent and persil which will usually get any stain out when mixed together in the machine. For heavier stains, I will use good ole dawn and baking soda!

These adorable PalmTree brand corduroy skinny jeans were a perfect find for my middle son! They are in good used condition besides the small lint balls on the pants but that is normal to find on velvety type materials. The goodwill is a GREAT place to find kids clothes, actually a lot better than once upon a child in my opinion.
Shown here are Sperry shoes for kids in size 2, these are for my oldest. I scored these for 5.99 folks!
This is a GREAT deal! Yes there is a few minimal states but that will be easy to get out! This is a great deal for the condition they are in. These will look brand new after being cleaned up!

Here is another goodwill find for my oldest! This brand is Crazy 8, another top brand for kids clothes. You can see here the quality of this shirt is really great! This will go great with a pair of skinny pants or jeans and his converse sneakers.
I found this adorable baby boden outfit,  which is another great clothing brand for kids at a different thrift store. It was the only children's clothing item I found at that thrift store that I liked. Sometimes you can score big and other times you will only find 1 or 2 items. The great thing about it is they always get new things in every single day. So don't feel discouraged if you don't find something great your first try, keep trying!

T
Now this was an amazing find for me! I love this line and collection and I have a lot of their items from my mother in law. I can't believe I got this for such a great deal!

I was very happy!

I will continue to share my thrift store finds and stylish outfits for my kids. I like to go a couple times a week just to walk through as well and look at different furniture finds.

I do also enjoy refurbished furniture stores. We have the found cottage and changing thymes around my area and both provide different vendors whom showcase their work and sell refinished furniture and other homemade or refinished goods!

Besides our beds and couches, a lot of the items in my home furniture wise has come from antique shops or thrift hunts. I enjoy refinishing furniture and can't wait to do more makeovers in my free-time!

Thanks for stopping by!

How to clean grout in one easy step!

I know this isn't the most exciting blog post and its going to be a quick one!

I love to clean so for me this was empowering and exciting! I felt so happy to see the grout finally white with literally NO effort and NO scrubbing!

It was so easy and the product I used was only $1!

YES, only one dollar bill!

Its very exciting, I know!

The product I purchased was from the Dollar Tree. Now I am not sure if this product truly works on other things like it is originally made for but for dirty grout, it works pretty darn good!

I started the process late at night and not just because I am a night owl and have nothing more fun to do at midnight except clean, its because it is pure liquid and the product will need to sit on your grout overnight or for a few hours and you will not want your littles ones walking through it especially since it is a cleaner.

Here is the cleaner I used:
The works tub and shower cleaner

The next photos may be hard to look at. Please keep in mind we live in a rental and have only lived here a few short months and I have tried everything to clean the grout even tried magic erasers. This stuff....

This stuff right here though is pretty darn amazing!

Its amazing because you soak your floors in it and let it sit...

Come back in two hours or the next morning and poof, its clean!

Just remember it is a very wet process so I would do this at night or while the kiddos are at school.

Here are the before and afters:

The before looks pretty gross but believe me I clean my bathroom pretty frequently throughout the week but I'd also like to enjoy my family and kids and don't want to scrub grout for hours on end.
This before photo is an up close shot of the part of grout I poured some of the cleaner on.

And TA-DA here is the after! I showed more of the tile in this photo to show some of the grout that I have not cleaned yet! This stuff is pretty powerful. Its also only $1, so it may be worth a shot if you have been looking for a solution for cleaning your grout!

Thanks for visiting and stopping by! Have a great day! :)

Everyone has to start somewhere, here is mine

This is my very first post.

I have tried to blog many times before and I feel like I sucked at it so here I am trying again for the 3rd time because 3rd times a charm right eh???

Ok, I plan on blogging about many things but my main topics will be about being a modern day homemaker and stay at home mama! I love to clean and I love to thrift! If there is a deal then I will find it!

I plan on doing thrift day friday's.

Sounds pretty great to me and it rhymes :)

I also enjoy cooking and baking when I have the time, moms seriously do not have time to do much of anything so I am surprised I am even up writing this and not sleeping or watching general hospital. ..

by the way that is my favorite show, can you believe julian wormed his way back into Alexis's life and Nina wormed her way into charlottes life? She is trying to be her mom! it makes me so mad. well anyways, thats for another day, I could go on and on.....

I also would like to share tips and tricks on this blog as well as furniture makeovers and decorating our rental.

We have lived in a rental home for the past 8 years... 8 YEARS! we have moved over 12 times and that includes different states as well. We are ready and willing to buy but the time has not come yet where we are able to.

I do everything possible to make a rental home lovable and livable and I would love to share those tips!

I like to organize and keep a clean and tidy home and let me tell you, it is HARD with 3 little boys but there are ways and steps to make it stay clean and there are ways to keep up on it!

I think I am supposed to pick one main thing for my blog to be about but its hard because I like many things! from all the research I have done, they say pick a main theme, I just can't do that...

I hope people will still like me and my blog...

here goes nothing.

XOXO, Courtney
